A ballet is a theatrical form of dance that are also mixed with other kinds of dances. Ballet is a french word that originated from an Italian word which is ballo, that means “a dance”. Through ballet, a dancer is able to show the human body in a very elegant and harmonious way. It has been alive since 500 years ago. However, the old ballet and the modern ballet is a lot different.
The first ever prima ballerina came from France. Her name is Mademoiselle La fontaine. She was popular for her long, stiff gown, her high-heeled slippers and her plumed head-dress. She was the sole performer of the Triumph of Love also known in french as Le Triomphe de l’ Amour. It was choreographed by Beauchamp and the music was by Lully. She was one of the greatest ballet dancers of all time that also started the professional dancers called ballerinas.
There were a lot of prominent ballet dancers in the history.
Marie Taglioni (1804-1884)
During those times, ballet dancers were able to “fly” because of the wires connected to their body that makes them fly like birds. She was one of them. His father influenced him and even made his own ballet which is called La Sylphide. It was a tragic romantic ballet. The sylphide died (tree spirit) leaving alone James to mourn for her in the forest.
Carlotta Grisi (1819-99)
When Taglioni was visiting in Russia as a tourist, Carlotta Grisi also arrived at the Paris opera. This is when Jules Perrot, a dancer, fell in love with her. Gautier also had a crush on her. He was the one who wrote a ballet story just for her. It was entitled as Giselle which is about a peasant girl who loved to dance but ended in a tragic way.
