The Story of ILIAD

The Iliad was written by Homer. He was also the author of the Odyssey. The story is the earliest and most famous Greek Literature. Like every epic poetry, it is written in a grand style and is about gods, goddesses, mythology and heroes. Homer lived approximately around the 8th century B.C. and told the story of events that happened 400 years earlier than him. He may not have written at all but he must have recited his poems orally.

The name Iliad came from the word Ilium which is another name for Troy. The Trojan war started when Prince Paris of Troy carried off Queen Helen of Sparta. Homer does not tell all the events of this war. He covers only a few weeks during the 10th and last year. Bur he uses the flashback technique, through which we see many earlier incidents, and he also gives many hints of what is to follow.

The chief hero is Achilles. Achilles becomes angry at Agamemnon, the Greek commander in chief, who takes away a prize Achilles had won. Achilles feels insulted and withdraws from the fight. Throughout most of the 24 books of the poem, he stays brooding angrily at his tent. But he is never far from our thoughts, and we watch him become a better human being through suffering. The very first words of the poem indicate the subject, “The wrath of Achilles is my theme,” the poet says.

Homer is dramatic, noble and realistic. We feel we know his characters.Though he was a Greek, he gives very fair treatment to the Trojans. The story moves rapidly. There are many speeches. One notable feature of Homer’s style  is the use of epithets. Achilles is “swift-footed”. The sea is “wine-dark”. Aphrodite is “laughter-loving”. As their “bible”, the Iliad had enormous influence on the thought of the Greeks. Alexander the Great carried a copy with him while conquering Asia. The Iliad also greatly influenced the world’s literature, not merely epic poetry. This influence is first evident among the Greeks themselves, especially the writers of tragedy.

The sequel to this epic story is of course the Odyssey, which tells the adventures and long journey home of Odyssey. To know more, watch this great interesting video below!

The Discovery of Electricity

Electricity is very important to us people. We won’t be able to run computers, it will be difficult for us to see in the dark during the night without light posts and we won’t be able to see our favorite shows in the television. But how did electricity originated?

Ancient Discoveries

The people in the pre-historic times were unaware that electricity can exist. However, the first ever discovery was by a Greek philosopher and scientist named Thales. He said that he was able to observe an “amber, a yellow, gem-like substance”. Whenever an amber is rubbed against a woolen cloth, it attracts really light objects like a feather and even leaves. Because he did not know about electricity, he was not able to justify this mysterious property of amber.

William Gilbert ( 1544-1603)

He was an English scientist who was able to realize that amber is not the only thing that has this kind of property. He was able to discover more during the year during the 1570. Some of these are glass, sulfur and sealing wax. He described the property as “electrics” from the Greek word of amber called as elektron.

Repeating the Experiment yourself

You can do it by rubbing a glass rod or glass plate with silk and then put it near to pieces of paper. These small pieces will start to cling on the glass. The same result will be seen if you rub a fur to a plastic. If you want to have a successful experimentation, do it during a dry day.

Explanation to the experiment

When you rub them both, they produce an electric charge. This called as the static electricity. Static means “at rest”. However, the current that runs in our electricity wires are called current electricity because they are moving from one place of the wire to another.

Am I Ready To Go To School?

How do you know if you are ready to school? Here are interesting things that you should really before we can say that you are ready to go schooling.

Being Independent

Being independent doesn’t mean you need to go to school alone, work to be able to sustain yourself and doing your homework on your own. There are simple things that you should do by yourself. One of the most important is knowing the bathroom and being able to handle bathroom needs without a companion. There can be consequences if these needs are not satisfied. For example is urinating. If you are planning to have a P.E. time, you should also learn how to take of your clothes, neatly pile them in your bag and tying your shoes. The faster, the more time you can enjoy your P.E. time which maybe the most enjoyable thing for kids who love playing.

Being Confident

It is normal for a child to be doubtful about going to a new and strange place without their parents. Without them, they feel that they’re not secured. However, it doesn’t mean you should sit at the corner of your classroom and not participating with fun activities. If you need something, you should know how to approach your teacher so she can help you. According to Claire Haas, social readiness is more important than academic readiness. This includes, chit chatting with your classmates, playing hide-and-seek and other fun activities together.

To Be Able to Focus and Listen

Kids are naturally curious wanderers. instead of listening to their parents, they continue playing with their toys and act like nothing is happening around them. This should be changed when already in school. To be able to learn from the teacher, a children must know how to listen attentively while the teacher is discussing so he or she will be able to learn new things. Aside from discussions, rules are also important to be followed. That’s why it’s a must for them to be able to understand these regulations.
