History of Badminton

Badminton is a sport where two players or two pairs compete each other using a racquet. However, before badminton was invented, there were already a lot of games played thousand years ago.

Ti Jian Zi was a popular diversion in China during the 5th century B.C.. Translated to english, it means booting the shuttle. Few centuries later, a new game emerged not only in China but also in Japan, India and Greece. It is called the Battledore and Shuttlecock. The battledore was used to strike the Shuttlecock in a back-and-forth motion. Children in England was introduced to this past time a few centuries later. They renewed the name to Jeu De Volant. In India, they named it to Poona by 1860s. This time, they attached a net. British men were able to witness this game in India and brought materials and equipment back to England to share to their people.

A few years later, the Duke of Beaufort invited people to his country place for a lawn party. He called it Badminton. Important people were playing Poona during that day and many were commenced to this game. Since then, they called it “the Badminton game“. They were able to form the Bath Badminton Club in 1877 and were able to apply official regulations.

In 1935, the IBF or the International Badminton Federation were founded by 9 countries including England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Denmark, Holland, Canada, New Zealand and France. On this day, the organization has more than 150 countries as members to the federation.
